What Is Mixing?
Mixing is the process of taking individual recorded tracks — vocals, drums, 808s, synths, ad-libs — and blending them together into a cohesive, balanced song. A mixing engineer adjusts volume levels, applies EQ to carve out frequency space, uses compression to control dynamics, and adds spatial effects like reverb and delay to create depth and width.
For hip hop and R&B specifically, mixing is where the low-end magic happens. Our engineers lock kick drums and 808 basslines into dedicated frequency pockets using sidechain ducking and phase alignment, ensuring your low end hits hard without muddying the mix. We also handle vocal chain processing — pitch correction with Melodyne and Auto-Tune, multi-stage compression, and de-essing — to make sure your voice sits perfectly upfront in the track.
What Is Mastering?
Mastering is the final step, applied to the completed stereo mix. Where mixing deals with individual elements, mastering deals with the song as a whole. The goal is to optimize overall frequency balance, dynamic range, stereo width, and loudness so your track sounds consistent across all listening environments — from club sound systems to phone speakers.

Your stereo mix runs through analog outboard gear — VCA bus compression, Pultec-style passive EQ, and tape saturation — adding warmth and harmonic density that pure software can't replicate. Then we apply precise digital limiting to hit streaming platform loudness targets.
Streaming Loudness Standards: Why LUFS Matter
Every major streaming platform uses loudness normalization. If your master is too loud, the platform turns it down — sometimes introducing distortion. If it's too quiet, it sounds weak compared to other tracks. Here are the targets we master to:

Do You Need Both Mixing and Mastering?
If your track was recorded and balanced well during the session, you might only need stereo mastering — our $75 per song package handles this. However, if you have raw multitrack stems that need balancing, vocal tuning, and creative processing, you need full mix and master. Our most popular package at $250 per song includes up to 48 stems, vocal pitch correction, drum replacement, analog summing, and a final master.
For complex productions with dense arrangements, our Stem Mix & Master Pro package ($450/song) offers unlimited stems, manual Melodyne alignment, and Dolby Atmos preparation. We also offer custom quotes for full EP and album projects that need consistent sonic cohesion across multiple tracks.
How to Submit Your Files
Preparing your stems correctly saves time and ensures the best results. Export dry 24-bit or 32-bit float WAV files from your DAW — bypass all master bus limiters, clippers, and aggressive compressors before exporting. Label every track clearly (Kick_In.wav, LeadVocal_Dry.wav, 808.wav, SynthPad.wav) and ensure all tracks start at the exact same timeline point (0:00) for seamless alignment.
Submit your files through our online portal along with 1-2 commercial reference tracks that capture your target sound. Include your rough demo mix and any specific creative notes — like a telephone filter on the bridge or stutter delay on the hook. You'll receive your first mix pass within 3 to 5 business days.
